David Archuleta killed last night on American Idol!
It was amazing to watch someone with such talent shoot into the stratosphere of performance perfection when the stakes were so high, when the energy of the moment was so intense. He was in a zone I can only imagine, a zone of high flying connection, grace, passion and sound!

So, why do I hate him? Well, I don't. Not really. It's just that part of me that aches for an experience like that, a performance where every aspect of who I am — body, voice, heart, spirit — is so aligned, so coordinated and balanced, where I am so connected in my voice, my passion and the creative Source that empowers it all…well, I can only imagine it. Because I've never actually experienced it.

But I think that's exactly what David experienced last night. The pressure of being in competition, of being in the finale, of having come this far, it could have undone him, or anyone. But instead, it fueled him. He sang better AND was more connected to his heart, to the soul of his voice, than ever before on that show. It was an incredible thing to witness.

And unlike so many singers, the more animated and impassioned he became, the more technically proficient he became. He never once sacrificed his tone, pitch or rhythm to the excitement of the moment. Rather, his excitement only improved his sound and accuracy. It was incredible!

And that's why I hate him. He has such raw talent. And what is that quality in his voice that makes time stand still? It is a richness, a purity of intention, a beguiling warmth that is irresistible. Even if you don't like the song he's singing, or his 17-year old stage presence and the bouncy movement he makes (all of which I find utterly charming) you can't deny the enchanting quality of his voice. 

Good going, David. You got the goods, baby. At 17-years old. Be wise. Take is slow. And when you win tonight, which I'm sure you will, don't let record producers make you sing stupid, inane songs about nothing, or dress you up as a sex symbol. Stay true. Enjoy the ride.
